Hi James,

I do agree with you. SERP presence are way better than PR. There are cases wherein websites that doesn't have pagerank still outrank high PR sites in the searches. There are a lot of factors involved though, it could be link placements, proper targeting of keywords, backlinks, etc., however based on my observations, Pagerank sometimes help in ranking high on search results for targeting specific keywords.

Sometimes we think it's useless but we may also have to think otherwise because if Google wasn't thinking when they invented such metric, it could have diminished its value long ago but the mystery of this algorithm remains unknown.

At times, I think it's relevant sometimes not but with Google bashing the PR data on the Webmaster tools lately, they wanted webmasters to concentrate on other things than thinking of getting a high PR and spamming the web with useless links instead of writing quality content.

Personally, I'd prefer to be at the top of the serps first. When I'm there, let's see about PR.

With regard to advertisers preferring to place their ads on high PR sites only, I think they need only to be re-educated on the real thing that matters - traffic. One site on top of the serps means more exposure than another high PR site which is nowhere in the serps. On the real physical world, they would put their billboards on places where a lot of people could see it, not on a hilltop facing a first class millionaire's village where only a few residents could see. Just my 2 cents. :)

A search engine results page (SERP), is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query. The results normally include a list of web pages with titles, a link to the page, and a short description showing where the keywords have matched content within the page. A SERP may refer to a single page of links returned, or to the set of all links returned for a search query.

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of measuring its relative importance within the set.

Some people think higher PR means more authority and so all of the subpages will perform better in the SERPS. Who really knows though... this whole pagerank thing is a mess. I have a site with a couple hundred links thats a PR2, and another site that has 3,000 inlinks and it doesn't even have pagerank, yet it still ranks #3 on its targeted term. I would just like to see some consistency!

Some blog advertising networks really run after Pagerank for paid posts but does it have any other value aside from that? It's true that some webmasters flaunt PR but still presence in the SERPs (at least in the top ten of Google) is something anybody would like to achieve because it's genuine traffic less the promotion.

I reckon the only way that PR will make you any money is if you are doing paid posts where you get bigger offers the higher your rank is, or if an Advertiser approaches you for ad space.

Some also use to to show off to others how 'important' their site is. Personally I prefer good SERPs to PR any day.
