I know a guy who lived in China for several years, and the only way to go for him was to hop on a VPN connection. If you live in a society that really values its freedom, it’s hard to even grasp how restrictive some countries are.
Of course, if they caught him using the VPN to access banned material, he would have been in big trouble…

I don’t know how special the guy you said is. But you are not telling the truth on this point unfortunately as far as I know. Many people from free countries (US, CA, EU) live and work in China nowadays. I believe most of them (if not all of them) are able to access their internet (emails, MSN, Skype, ICQ, etc) without using VPN. Well you did say one thing correctly: if you tried to access banned materials like child pornography, FaLunGong, I still believe the big trouble you get is just you are unable to access those materials (national filtering) instead somebody tries to throw you into jail. Their prisons do not have so much room for such small things.
I appreciate any efforts to make China more free but not any attempt to demonize it.

The benefits are tempting, but some previous experience with services/products of this type were not very satisfactory for me as it sort of slowed down my surfing speed. I don’t know, it could just be the software I used. Perhaps other services can offer negligible surfing slowdown.

@Gomez, The only thing I know that would get you into trouble using VPN is if you’re spamming blatantly or might have written articles online exposing some rather serious and sensitive information that are government regulated.
