If I'm not mistaken, white noise is some kind of sound that tends to drown out other noises that may cause disturbance of sleep. I've in the past bumped into white noise because I dabbled for a while with brainwave entrainment and all researchers said that white noise added as a background to the entrainment sound file increases the chances of the 'frequency following response' of the brain to kick in more quickly.

My experiments a few years ago in this area convinced me that it works. In fact, once in a while, when I really find it difficult to sleep, I'd grab my mp3 player and play some old brainwave entrainment files with white background noise to help me ease into drowsiness. I also sometimes use it as soft background while meditating. I don't know if these sound machines output the same sounds I created before though.
