Using Your Backup Software Effectively

A shockingly large percentage of home computer users neglect to use computer backup software on a regular basis, leaving critical data and program files vulnerable to damage and loss in the event of a catastrophic failure.  A recent study showed that as many as 92% of people who use a computer regularly do not perform any backup of the computer’s hard drive to avoid risk of losing crucial files and information when the machinery fails, as all machines eventually will.  If you haven’t already, it is time to include yourself in the secure eight percent of computer users who have and use backup software as a part of their data stability system to keep their computer operating despite system crash or other catastrophe.

Benefits of Automation

cloud backupOnce installed and properly set up in your computer, software is generally automated, and will perform regular backups of critical files and new data.  This is an important feature, because it helps to eliminate the human factor of forgetting to perform the back up in a regular timely manner, exposing the system to gaps in backup records that can be costly.  Check the settings on your computer’s operating system, and become familiar with the backup software available to you.  Know how the options of the various settings available will impact your computer use, as backups are best performed when the system is not in use, and, depending on the complexity and extent of the backup, can take some extended time in many cases.  Having a regularly set schedule of computer backup is the important first step toward ensuring that you will not lose critical operating files or data that you have added, from financial or tax records to photos and video and music on your computer, the possibility of total loss of files is too catastrophic to leave to chance.

The backup software from is designed to perform regularly, on a user-defined schedule appropriate for your data and computing needs.  Regularity of back up process builds extra security into the system, by performing the crucial backup tasks at appointed intervals to be sure to capture all the updated and changed data that could be lost in the event of system crash.

External Storage

Once you have set up your backup system to operate at intervals to save files, you need to export the data to external data storage for added security.  After all, it makes little sense to maintain the backed up copy of critical files on the same device that holds the original files, as any damage to one will likely damage the other in some way.  Some of the best options in external storage of backup data include:

– Flash drive for reasonable amounts of data
– External hard drive with USB connection for larger storage
– Remote storage services

When you have a backup system at work in your computer, including a full stability and security system that includes off-site storage, redundancy of backup, and regular tests of the functionality of the restoration process, you have the reliability and protection that more than ninety percent of home computer users do not have.  With the stability that backup software provides, you will be able to get your system back running rapidly after the inevitable data loss event occurs.

Understanding the Value of Software Testing

November 9, 2013 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Software development doesn’t end after programming codes. Applications designed for special use or specific operating system undergoes a very crucial process which is testing to find out if it serves its purpose.

As developers become more focused on creation and development, they tend to outsource their testing requirements to more experienced professionals that specializes in web application automated testing.

This approach not only lessens their responsibilities but also provides them with a security blanket that the third-party testing company will provide them with an honest and objective feedback which will help them improve their software before it’s even released to the public.

There are many software testing scenarios where small and medium enterprise businesses can venture into depending on their needs which includes mobile applications testing, web applications testing, enterprise applications testing, cloud applications testing and big data applications testing.

As the number of mobile users increase over the last few years, let me focus on the nature of mobile application testing. Mobile application development has become a platform for businesses to increase their revenue and to market their products and services as the number of smartphone users increased their demand for mobile apps.

Tablet computers even added to the demand for apps that not only work for phones but on the tablets as well making the industry for mobile apps development an increasingly lucrative venture.

Having said this, 15-22% of all website traffic since 2012 all came from phones and tablets thus making businesses more attracted to the idea of developing their own mobile applications catered specifically to mobile and tablet users for increased revenue and larger market reach.

Consequently, mobile applications development grew in demand as well as the need to adopt into different platforms (operating systems), display sizes of screens, and device features. This is where the need for a third-party testing service comes into play. The system will then emulate and automate the testing process of the mobile application to ensure that they will work on different platforms, devices and hardware it’s designed for.

So the next time you download an application for your phone or tablet and it works perfectly, that means the company is just as serious as making their users happy than making money.

Clinical Studies Software in the Cloud

October 18, 2013 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

As in industries in the pharmaceuticals, medical device manufacturers and Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) face a herculean task of ensuring data integrity each day plus the requirements of regulatory standards becoming more and more of a way of life, the question remains, can eclinical software live up of the challenges of the present?

As environmental measures come into play, the use of paper in managing clinical studies has been proven costlier. It’s because the nature of physical documents not only consume trees cut down to make paper but is also labor intensive and shipment can become an added burden. With shipping physical documents comes time and lack of security.

While traditional installed Electronic Data Capture (EDC) offers a unified database for clinical information and studies, the downside is that it’s expensive due to licensing costs, maintenance and upgrade fees, requires IT manpower and lack flexibility for clinical study managers because of the need for a programmer intervention in terms of control.

Eclinical Software as a service or software in the cloud, such as those of Medrio, offers a fully hosted Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system that promotes faster study timelines and lesser costs even adding more control for study managers without any programming necessary with little to only a few days deployment.

With the cloud model or SaaS (Software as a Service), it’s a web-based platform which means it can be controlled anywhere and anytime via a web browser that is connected to the internet.

As a cloud service, it functions on pay as you go basis with no IT resources or manpower needed, is highly cost-efficient, and is security compliant.

Five years ago and counting, QuickBooks and Rapid Inventory have been successfully working together in raising the bar in inventory management software quality.

Rapid Inventory requires no software or hardware installation, no IT maintenance requirements to little or no training required.

AO: Rapid Inventory is a completely integrated QuickBooks inventory management system. Using the secure QuickBooks Web Connector – a software application that runs on Microsoft Windows, it enables Rapid Inventory’s specially-designed cloud inventory tracking application to exchange data with QuickBooks.

QuickBooks integration is smooth like plug-and-play taking existing functioning QuickBooks inventory tracking and integrating it with Rapid’s online system ensures increased efficiency and real-time warehouse inventory data.

QuickBooks, being the most widely used accounting software for SMEs maybe a great tool but lacks better inventory management functionalities. This is where Rapid Inventory comes in handy. It easily becomes QuickBooks Inventory Management module for QuickBooks Pro, Premier, and Enterprise. A substantial QuickBooks inventory tracking functionality added to QuickBooks.

Rapid Inventory uses QuickBooks data such as item and quantity while at the same time adding additional attributes such as Warehouse, Location, Lot Number, Expiration Date, and Hold Reason. Such combination of data creates a unique inventory that is nearly impossible to manually track that only a QuickBooks inventory management system can do.
By this, it gives Rapid Inventory the power of QuickBooks plus a lot more to offer.

How Asset Tracking Reduce Office Expenses

June 23, 2013 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 1 – 2 minutes

Everything that businesses spend on a frequent basis that are used for its routine daily operations are assets. IT assets include computers, servers, notebooks; and other office equipment like copiers, phones and even furniture. While assets are not limited to items that are being used, it also counts those that are being sold and or distributed to clients.

Asset tracking methods come in various ways but in these times when pen and paper can become cumbersome, barcoding significantly speeds up inventory tracking and asset management. Barcoding easily beats the quite old fashioned spreadsheet and lessen dependency on paper.

Inventory management can be overwhelming at times that’s why it becomes apparent for productive businesses to adopt the use of Asset Tracking Software to do the job. This way, replenishment of stocks, deliveries and logistics coordination will be more manageable thereby allowing management to focus on the other aspects of the business.

Effective asset management and tracking systems definitely cuts cost on expenses, boosts efficiency and customer service focus and increase productivity.

Some companies like EMS Barcode Solutions assist in integration of Asset Tracking, Inventory tracking, and time and attendance solutions which can easily adapt to any forms of business and processes. Similar companies offer full onsite installation, process writing, and training to jumpstart the asset tracking initiative.

Code Signing Certificates: The Lowdown

April 16, 2013 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Whether you’re a little familiar with developing software for use by others, or you’re a complete newbie planning on dipping your toes into the venture, the importance of a Code Signing Certificate will soon become clear. Whether you’ve developed a piece of software for a mobile device or you’re working on an update or a patch for existing software, code signing certificates ensure that the code is authentic and not corrupt.

While SSL certificates stored in a Certificate Intelligence Center are key for online business ventures, code signing certificates are crucial for software development. The way they work is simple. As with SSL certificates, code signing implements the use of two keys – the private and public keys. When code is written, a developer would use a private key to sign the code and confirm that it hasn’t been corrupted. At the other end, the user uses the public key to ‘unlock’ the new code. It’s recommended that the public key is acquired from a reputable CA too, so that full trust can be ensured.

To ensure complete reliability, purchase these code signing certificates from a reputable Certificate Authority to maximise confidence and trust. In fact, some providers, including Windows, dictate that code, particularly for mobile applications, is signed with a certificate issued by a trusted Certificate Authority.

Code signing is particularly handy when authorship and origin isn’t clear, such as in Java and ActiveX environments. These certificates are also regularly used for updates and patches for existing programmes and software, so that the user can be sure that there is no malicious activity and can be safe in the knowledge that, when installing the new patch, they won’t be compromising their computer network.

If you’re a software developer or you’re dabbling in the creation of code and software for the public market, make sure you understand the basics of the code signing certificate. Trust and consumer confidence are key and the basis of lucrative business.

Software to Unlock an iPhone?

August 24, 2011 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Have you ever thought of the idea of unlocking your iPhone? If other phone models can be unlocked by some type of software, these days, it’s not impossible that an iPhone can’t be. While you can find many software sellers around left and right promising about unlocking your smartphone from Apple, think again. Who knows, you just mind find the right one from this site.

Though I normally don’t post unlock software like this here because I’m not sure of its legality, I took the liberty of doing so and leave it to my reader’s discretion.

Simmy is iTrappedJust a few things to remember, using an Unlock iPhone Software is not for the novice since it may require technical know-how. You don’t want to screw up your phone and leave us responsible for it so use it with caution or ask an expert to do it for you.

The idea of unlocking the iPhone has been around in the market some few years ago and like I said, it’s a bit complicated. When I say complicated, it might as well be difficult. These steps may require users to take their iPhone apart and rebuild it which, again, may cause damage to your phone.

Jailbreaking the iPhone is done when an iPhone user wants to install free iPhone applications that were previously not allowed in the Apple App Store for iPhones. The benefit of Jailbreaking the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 is that you gain full access to the iPhone’s firmware and therefore you are able to change many things that previously weren’t possible to change.

This process however can be performed on the iPhone 5 using the iPhone 5 unlock Software that you can find by clicking on any of the links on this article. Again, as I said, use it and do it with precaution. Reader discretion is advised.

Manage Multiple PC at once with Advanced IP Scanner

July 13, 2011 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Working with multiple computers connected to a network can be tedious especially on big IT environments where computers can be on different portions of a building. However, software developers have come up with better applications to provide simpler solutions to these challenges thus remote software management solutions arise.

While a regular IT person may simple shut down a PC by physically doing the process, it may take forever if he has to do it from one floor of the building to another, that’s why special software like the Advanced IP Scanner 2.0 does the trick. Its user need not to be physically in front of the computer to do certain tasks such as the one mentioned above but multiple arrays of tasks using a few mouse clicks. Isn’t it great?

Don’t get too excited though, as you need to make sure you have this software running into your server with multiple computers connected to it otherwise you won’t get its purpose. Having said that, this software works only on Windows-based systems for the meantime but it’s a freeware so you can use it without having to pay any dime.

Advanced IP Scanner 2.0

The newer version offers new scanning options for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and shared folders as well as for Radmin.

Radmin and Advanced IP Scanner integration offers real flexibility in terms of accessing each PC connected to the network, PCs running Radmin as server but a Radmin Viewer needs to be installed to make the remote access possible.

It makes easier to retrieve names of routers and other devices running Linux and Mac OS (iPhone, iPad) but again, this doesn’t work with Mac and Linux. It also offers remote Wake-On-LAN and remote Shutdown for groups of computers as for the example given above. This Advance IP Scanner also offers ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) scanning for full information about your network with a much friendlier user interface and simplified settings.

Having used many types of similar software, I think this one needs a go. Go check out Advanced Ip Scanner homepage for a more detailed information or you may Download it now to test it.

Recruitment Software: How It Can Help

March 5, 2011 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Recruitment and staff management can be a very labour intensive process, and great organisation is the key to success. Even keeping track of how far through the application process each candidate has come can get pretty tricky, especially when dealing with a large volume of applicants.

Excel has been mine and many other’s longstanding weapon of choice in the fight against chaos, but even with Excel things can get lost in the mix. With this is mind I started to look into various software aimed at helping solve these issues, and improve my efficiency in the process. There’s been a variety of software packages available for a while now, but PAAM from Hotbox Studios seems to answer all the issues in one neat box.

PAAM is a software application that allows you to create roles, and guide your candidates right through the application process. Once the appropriate roles have been filled with staff, you can then go on to assign shift patterns and track your staff’s performance; getting quick and easy access to all the figures you need.

Organising shift patterns in PAAM

Organising shift patterns in PAAM

The beauty of this is that no longer do you have to create complicated spreadsheets, and transfer data between worksheets. Using an application like PAAM saves time and effort, and probably a fair amount of mistakes in the process.

It would seem that I’m not the only one to think so:

“PAAM is easy to learn and use – the software helped organise the staff I required for a show in no time at all. One of the best features is that the staff need only login to their account to keep up to date” – Fiona Ingram, Festival Republic Ltd Area Manager at the Glastonbury Festival & Reading Festival

PAAM has also got quite an interesting background which is probably why it stands out from the pack:

PAAM was initially designed to accept the growing number of applications for positions at UK events and assist with consolidating the pre-event, onsite and post-event administration involved with recruiting and managing large teams. So far it’s been used by various clients at events such as Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, so it must be fairly robust!

What I found really refreshing was the way in which this software has been developed, and it seems to have been built to solve direct staff issues; rather than built to fit into what a developer might imagine a manager needs.

To find out more about PAAM, take a tour of the software.

ActivTrak Launches Free Employee Monitoring Software

October 13, 2010 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Birch Grove. All opinions are 100% mine.

Keeping a watchful eye on your employees especially on what they do online and how they are maximizing their time during work hours is crucial to maintaining productivity levels in the organization.

At home, parents also have the responsibility to monitor what their kids are doing especially when they are exposed to the threats of cyberspace.

In line with these measures, Birch Grove Software, a company based in Texas has developed a free employee monitoring software called ActivTrak that can track computer related activities in detail from application logs, documents opened to sites visited in just a few clicks from a remote desktop in real-time.

The software has a client-server architecture that allows an administrator to install invisible clients on the computer being monitored which any user without administrator rights can remove or deactivate.

The free version of ActivTrak can only monitor up to three (3) computers (without any functional limitations) which is enough for small private business and homes with children using computers regularly.

Compared to most types of remote monitoring software that I used, ActivTrak is the only one giving their tool for free and not just for one but for three computers as clients.

Being a software critic myself, I normally have to try and test these tools before posting about them but this time, I’m leaving it to you, the reading public, to find out and tell me what you think about this software.

You can download activtrak from here and use it for free. I might as well come up with another post about this so stay tuned.

Get the IT Pro Advantage with Free Network Monitoring and Help Desk Software from Spiceworks

June 23, 2010 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 4 – 6 minutes

Most IT professionals struggle with efficiency brought by using separate tools or sticking to the old ways of manually performing specific functions, such as a routine network monitoring and PC audit.

Managing your network and performing a variety of tasks such as keeping track of all network activities, software installs, and hardware and peripheral changes can be tedious. However, these tasks can be done flawlessly with the help of the right network monitoring suite like Spiceworks‘ free network monitoring software, a robust tool for IT professionals and SysAdmins.

Spiceworks’ free network monitoring software allows you to easily monitor individual devices within your network simply by setting certain parameters such as available disk space, offline and online mode, and more. Once you have gathered information on a particular PC using a desired parameter, it can easily be monitored without any hassle.

While your network monitoring software runs in the background, you can track even the tiniest details on what has been going on with your system via alerts that are set-up across your environment. Normally, they are delivered into your email as it happens, like for example, whenever there’s new software installed or when something is altered. Also, managing email space on Spiceworks can be a breeze including Rackspace-hosted email accounts.

Network monitoring wouldn’t be justified without the ability to analyze bandwidth use which can be viewed via its user interface.

This software is indeed remarkable despite the fact that it was distributed freely on the internet for users in the IT industry to take advantage of. It has not failed my expectations and for a free network monitoring tool, I think it has covered all the basic features any software of its kind should have.

See Spiceworks Free Network Monitoring Software in action below.

Help Desk Software to Further Simplify IT

More than just monitoring a bunch of networks, Spiceworks also allows IT pros to address technical inquiries and requests. In order to gather these support cases all in one place, Spiceworks offers help desk software as part of their complete IT management software suite. The help desk feature makes it possible for IT pros and their corresponding teams or departments to manage their technical support issues and solve each submitted case.

This free help desk software allows IT personnel to receive, assign, create, and track support tickets or queries across different channels. In fact, Spiceworks expands its capability to create a web portal to manage tasks for trouble ticket handling. Likewise, it shares contact information and other announcements like maintenance schedules a whole lot more.

Like most help ticketing platforms, support queries can be answered quickly through emails (either manually or automated). That way, Spiceworks leverages mobile functionality to respond to support queries via smart phones for on-the-go resolution.

See Spiceworks Free Help Desk Software in action below.

Free IT for You and Me

It seems pretty clear that Spiceworks’ free network monitoring and help desk software is innovative. However, its most of all cost-effective since it is free!

With network monitoring and help desk along with a plethora of other features like warranty tracking, virtualization management, troubleshooting, and software audit tools, Spiceworks definitely raises the bar in software development by coming up with effective and highly useful tools for today and tomorrow’s IT pro.

Does Noise Reduction Software Work on VoIPs?

June 22, 2010 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Recently, I have been testing the functionality of noise reduction software on several VoIP clients including Skype and Yahoo Voice via Yahoo Messenger IM client and it was quite surprising that behind the popularity of VoIPs, add-ons still have a long way to go before it could potentially drive users.

I tested SoliCall noise reduction software for VoIPs on both Skype and Yahoo Voice to determine if this kind of tool really works. This software according to its developer was also designed to work on Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk.

On Skype, the integration was very simple which can be done only by changing the Audio Settings (if you’re using the latest version) to SoliCall but that’s when it’s completely installed. This software also allows call recording on mp3 (mono/stereo) and wav format.

Saving the changes on Skype only happens after clicking the Save button however, once you try to get back to your settings, it returns to the way it was. So basically, you can’t really test how it performs on Skype. By the way, I’m using version

For Yahoo, the same things goes, it must be integrated first on Calling & Devices option within Preferences by selecting SoliCall then clicking on Save. Fortunately, it worked on Yahoo which means that I can do a test call and record it at the same time and I did.

The test call I’ve made was pretty short and it’s a bit better although I couldn’t say that it was perfect or good because I’m still hearing some background noise. I must say that it does some very slight improvements but those were not that too distinct just so you wouldn’t expect that much.

Overall, it still needs some work to do. Well, it’s still in beta but I was hoping that at least it should have worked on both my IM clients.

Do you think it’s worth trying out at this point? You be the judge.

If you know any similar type of software, please let me know. You can download SoliCall for free via this link.

Have you encountered a situation when you cannot remove an external hard drive—flash drives or memory sticks, card readers, portable drives or even gadgets when using the safely remove hardware option in Windows?

I did, on several occasions. There are countless of tips and tricks online that have been written on this topic when you search using Google but none of them has actually made it easier for me. Believe me, I’ve done it all.

There was even a trick that I’ve known wherein you simply have to open Windows Task Manager via CTRL+Alt+Del on your PC, then select explorer.exe and press End Process. Wait for the task bar to disappear then bring back the Task Manager, click on File, click Add New Task, then type explorer.exe in the field and press OK.

Though this trick works sometimes, there was a point when it didn’t and I’ve searched all over the internet to figure out a solution and nothing ever worked until I finally found this nifty software called USB Safely Remove by Crystal Rich, Ltd.

USB Safely Remove software is a light tool that serves as a USB Device Manager for removable drives. USB Safely Remove normally shows the programs which prevent the device from being stopped (which happens when the safely remove hardware on Windows wouldn’t work) and allows you to close these programs or just the files that prevent the normal removal option from working.

USB Safely Remove

It was indeed a saving grace and never would I even go back online and deal with any tricks on the same issue ever.

Aside from what’s mentioned above, short cuts are also available for quicker removable drive stoppage, includes auto run for disconnection/connection, command line usage for safe removal and return device back functionality wherein stopped devices (not unplugged) can be put back to work in one click.

This USB device manager is compatible on Win 2000XP2003VistaWin7 OS, 3264 bit system plus it’s very light at 3.6 MB.

The next time you have problems with Windows’ safely remove hardware, you know where to go. Download it here now!

May 6, 2010 | By | 3 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Getting rid of duplicate files on your computer can actually do a lot with improving your system performance by freeing up spaces on your hard drive.

I find this really helpful since I’m blogging on a 13GB HD that’s why every kilobyte matters. And how would you remove those duplicate files on your PC without the hassle of going over each folder?

Easy Duplicate Finder effectively does the job of determining dupe files on your computer so you can free up your computer’s hard drive to achieve a better performance, speed up indexing, and reduce back up size and time.

Easy Duplicate Finder

The duplicate file finder software checks for duplicate photos, documents, spreadsheets, and MP3s among others while at the same time providing the option to users to either remove the files permanently, move them into the recycle bin for future recovery or renaming duplicate files using prefixes in case of testing which files are really intended for deletion.

While moving deleted files into the recycle bin can be useful for accidental file deletion, it doesn’t contribute on freeing up disk space since the physical presence of the file itself is still on the computer.

This software definitely resolves duplicate file problems in less the time and effort plus its intuitive user interface makes it easy to maneuver aside from the fact that it scans faster compared to any software of its kind.

It can be a little tricky at first but like I said, it’s very easy to use and there’s no reason for you to mess up with your files in case you got lost along the way. Download the software here and start cleaning the clutter on your computer today.

Grab a Free Portable Media Player from SE-Soft

April 25, 2010 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Having able to play your favorite audio and video files on any Windows PC is a normal requirement for all systems. However, there are instances wherein missing registry files associated with Windows Media prevents media files from not playing.

This has happened to me some time ago and the worse is, I cannot even update to the latest Windows Media Player version. Now, what happens if you came over to a friend’s house and this is the situation you’re into? You can use alternative software for download but what if your friend’s internet connection is down?

Alright, you brought with you a thumb drive and you badly needed those audio files on his computer for a project. What would you do then?

Enough with the thinking and let me make your life a little bit easier. Simply download the portable SE-MediaPlayer into your USB device, extract the zip file and run the program. A media player window will open which will allow you to readily play the media files such as MP3, MP4, OGG files among others on the computer or the ones on the removable drive if there are, including CDs and DVDs.

SE MediaPlayer

The software has its own built-in audio and video codecs for managing your files which means it doesn’t depend on the existing codecs on the computer.

If you ever used a USB with an existing copy of SE-MediaPlayer that doesn’t execute and renders an error dialogue that the software can’t initialize with code 0xc0000135, that means a serious registry corruption was found on the PC and it has nothing to do with the program. This error needs to be fixed using a registry cleaner or correction tool otherwise you can’t run the software no matter how many times you try.

SE-MediaPlayer offers player customizability features, playlist management and language support.

A truly innovative and free portable media player designed for today’s flexibility hungry technology enthusiasts.

I’ve been test driving this software for days and I can really tell that you can be satisfied with it too. Download it now and tell me what you think.

McAfee Antivirus False Positive Quick Fix

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

Most McAfee users were tremendously devastated Wednesday when an update or a signature definition file also known as DAT was released, DAT 5958 in particular, caused massive interruptions in industries worldwide on computers running Windows XP as clearly identified by CITES.

McAfee Antivirus

The said update turned into a false positive detecting svchost.exe, a Windows system file commonly used by legitimate programs running on a Windows system, as a virus.

Although malware usually injects itself into the process, anti-virus software that would mistakenly flag this process could cause system errors such as endless reboot and the presence of the blue screen of death, the same thing that happened on the recent havoc caused by a faulty McAfee update.

McAfee as a result came out with a new update, 5959 DAT file release which can be downloaded from here:

Complete instructions on how to fix the false positive from your PC can be found here.

“We all know that part of taking care of our computer is by keeping our antivirus software updated as often as possible to keep us away from potential security threats at all times however, unforeseen cases like these are inevitable.”

Who would’ve thought that an update from our trusted security company could turn into a potential threat far worse than a virus and create massive disruptions?

Watching live TV broadcasts via satellite has always been tied up with additional costs in home cable charges especially with spectacular events on pay-per-view mode such as boxing matches and exclusively distributed movie viewing rights among others.

On the other hand, geographical locations sometimes hinder the benefits of viewers from certain parts of the world to enjoy television shows and series normally distributed in North America.

At this time of age, gone are the days when users at home has to pay for costly cable, satellite gadgets, and pay additional fees for added channels when TV viewing software finally came to the rescue. Although most television channels with exclusively distributed rights cannot be found on most live TV streaming software in the market, there are however some tools that completely standout.

Having said that, I think Readon TV Movie Radio Player outsmart most software of its kind with its vast range of channel options having thousands of them from all over the world aside from allowing users to watch live satellite TV, the latest movies and those from the not-so-distant-past through its “Movies on Demand” feature including Live Sports and Radio broadcasts.

Auto-shutdown, control panel customization including color scheme selection and plugin installation are all integrated in the menu display are just some of the savvy features you can get of out this one-of-a-kind free software. Yes, you got it right, it’s free to use!

You might wonder why it’s free. There are actually some ads on the left portion of the player’s screen where the videos and mp3s will be played but these ads normally don’t show up on selected channels and generally do not obstruct the viewing experience at all.

It’s safe to download—adware and malware free and is legal. It doesn’t have extra toolbar or anything that comes with it. Supports Windows XP 32/64 bit, Windows Vista 32/64 bit, and Windows 7 systems and requires .Net Framework 2.0 or 3.5 for Windows 7, Adobe Flash Player 9.0 or above, Internet Explorer 6.0 or above, DIVX Web Player, and SopFilter.

HOW TO: Export Bookmarks Between Web Browsers Easily

March 27, 2010 | By | 4 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

If you’re the kind of user that navigates the web using different browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, or Opera aside from the usual Windows default Internet Explorer, you certainly have experienced a time wherein you may have newly bookmarked some webpages on Firefox however it’s not possible to pull it up on Chrome unless you open both browsers and copy one from the other. Am I right?

Exporting bookmarks from one browser to another doesn’t have to happen only during fresh installations. This traditional way limits our accessibility to those pages that are valuable to us because we are restricted by the browser we are currently using.

Using Transmute will make it possible for us to convert and export our existing bookmarks from one major web browser into another with so much ease giving us the ability to try out different web browsers, synchronize bookmarks between systems, organize and convert bookmarks for use in bookmark managers and share them with others.

Transmute is available both as an installable and portable software. The free version is actually usable enough to convert your bookmarks between major browsers aside from its auto backup feature though the Plus and Pro version offers a wider variety of functionalities that would certainly blow you away.

I’ve given it a go since I use 3 of the major browsers mentioned above so that I could access my saved pages anytime between the three. Go ahead and download it now and see for yourself. Share your opinion about this software below at the comments section.

A Closer Look at Agile Software Development

January 20, 2010 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

I have once discussed on this blog the nature of software development processes which includes Royce’s Waterfall Model, a sequential approach to software development attributed to the waterfall because of its steadily flowing progress.

This time, I’ll be talking about a rather different software development process derived from the agile manifesto which was a statement of principles that underpin agile software development.

Significant values are driven by agile software development methods including giving much weight on individuals and interactions over processes and tools on an agile team, creation of working software within weeks time against comprehensive documentation and longer time frame, high importance on customer collaboration compared to contract negotiation on other systems plus a rather responsive outlook to change than strictly following an organized plan.

One of the main important stages of software development is implementation or coding. Continuous integration being a core process during this stage encourages developers to effectively write tests with each piece of code aside from providing immediate feedback to developers and technical leads and teams. It’s vital that a consistent approach to issue tracking is implemented to quickly respond to bug issues and defects, and to all other demands of the project.

While agile software development is more focused on people and interactivity, development teams would not be functional without the use of some savvy agile tools such JIRA Studio or JIRA with GreenHopper plugin for project management, Confluence for agile collaboration, FishEye for code analysis, Bamboo for continuous integration, Clover and Crucible for code coverage and review, respectively alongside an appropriate Pyxis training program.

Although there are advantages and disadvantages on any process or methodology, what matters in the long run is for developers to come up with great software that will provide value to clients and users.

Anti-Copyright Infringement Software for P2P Users

January 16, 2010 | By | 1 Reply More

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

I couldn’t believe what I’ve read the very first time I saw the description of this freeware from a known software download site. I told myself, really? Is there such thing as software to keep P2P software users against copyright infringement lawsuits and identity theft?

If you’re one of the many users of peer-to-peer file sharing network sites and uses their tool for file uploading and downloading purposes, you better read along because this might seriously hit you.

Peer to peer file sharing networks like LimeWire, uTorrent, Azureus Vuze, BitTorrent, eMule, or Ares where music, movies, or software are shared can eventually expose you to copy infringement lawsuits and identity theft when not seriously thought about.

You wouldn’t want to pay millions like this woman here or get into trouble and be broke similar to this case. Both incidents directly point to P2P software—it’s dangers and the consequences of irresponsible use.

According to my reading, ZapShares scans and monitors your computer to identify potential security threats caused by file sharing software installed on your PC.

The capability of the software ensures that you or anybody in your household doesn’t accidentally share files that could lead to expensive copyright infringement lawsuits and protects your private information from identity thieves.

ZapShares when activated creates a Secured Vault for downloads similar to this destination folder

C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataZapSharesDownloads-SecureVault.

The way files are shared would still depend on the folder’s location. The best way to do for it to work is set your P2P software’s download location to the Secured Vault.

Since copyright violation points to P2P users who distribute copyrighted materials to other P2P users for download, this software then prevents the unwanted from happening.

Although I’m not thoroughly convinced that this could prevent identity theft because based on my experience with 4Shared whose software I’ve tried works typically by scanning your computer’s hard drive and making it available online which is very frightening. 4Shared is a web-based P2P file sharing network that is not supported by ZapShares. The former creates a virtual folder that makes your files available online. One sad thing about this network is that you don’t have the ability to delete your account within the site once you created it. You have to email them instead.

4Shared was cited above as an example that would provide an understanding on the dangers of using P2P software, web-based or not. I don’t guarantee that ZapShares work 100% and I can’t vouch for it simply because I don’t have accounts with LimeWire, FrostWire, Azereus Vuze, uTorrent, BitTorrent, Ares, eMule, eMule Plus, and Shareaza which only means as well that I haven’t used any of these networks’ software or services. I can only say that you use it at your own discretion.

P2P networks have advantages and disadvantages but it’s all up to you to weigh things and think which side you are choosing. Let me know your thoughts about this.

January 16, 2010 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

Computer users are often times bombarded with a lot of information about their system especially when there are concerns pertaining to support queries either over the phone or online through forums and even offline with technicians.

It will be very inconvenient if we’re not familiar with the hardware classes on our PC and the drivers associated with it.

How do we know if a particular hardware on our PC needs backing up? How about determining which component requires drivers like non-plug and play web cams, DVD Writer Hardrives, external devices like mp3s among others?

If you haven’t realized how useful software for these purpose can be, then you better read this post. Device driver and hardware detection software matters because they serve as your saving grace when you accidentally lost your device driver CDs or installers for webcams, MP3s or other external devices that needs these applications in order for you to complete certain tasks on your PC along side the use of these gadgets.

Driver Magician Lite was able to prove to me how software of this kind works like magic. I received a web cam months ago that doesn’t come with a driver or installer within the package in order to work. I tried plugging in the new web cam alongside my existing one which comes with a driver.

I run the software and it was able to detect all the hardware components within the system as well as the corresponding drivers needed to run each component.

Based on the image below, for USB Video Device (the web cam) it says when you click on the description right below the menu read:

“Driver files of this device are contained in Microsoft Windows and are automatically installed by it when detected, so it is NOT necessary to back them up”

which only means that such device is plug and play. No driver is needed to be installed in order for it to work.

Driver Magician Lite

On the other hand, taking a look at USB PC Camera VC305 which was my existing install with a required driver, if you click on it, it reads below the menu,

“Driver files of this device are not contained in Microsoft Windows, so it is necessary to back them up”

which means these device needs a driver to be installed in order to work.

What’s useful about this software is that you can back up these device drivers either on a different folder on your PC or in a removable directory e.g. a thumb drive or an external hard drive.

So the next time that you run into connecting hardware on your computer, simply run the software and it will show you in case you’re not sure if the device you connected requires a driver or is readily usable.

Driver Magician Lite is freeware (about 1.63MB in size) but can be enough if all you wanted was a backup copy of your drivers and some information about your system however, you can upgrade to a paid version for $29.95US with a file size of 3.76MB with more added features.

You may wish to try the free version via this link.

Handling different kinds of files on a daily basis have never been easier because of my familiarity with file extensions as well as the various workarounds that could be done on a file depending on my needs.

A single .wav or audio file for example can be converted into an mp3 file to fit a Sony PSP, PS3, iPod, Zune or Xbox 360 for playability in these gadgets. Likewise, you can convert them into 3GP files for Blackberry Pearl and Storm.

Video files such as AVI, MPEG Video, WMV (Windows Media Video) file, DVR-MS, and TiVo videos can also be converted to run on any of the above mentioned mediums. Also, downloaded videos from YouTube, or Metacafe can be converted into DVD as well but rarely can you find typical software capable of doing all of those file conversions I’ve mentioned including the power of backing up DVD movies to DVD.

A novice user can easily become a Pro by using the ultimate functionality delivered by 123 Media Max simply because the exciting feature of being able to create backup copies of your favorite Blu-ray movie into a standard DVD RW disc while maintaining HD quality is too much to ask for a certain piece of software, a Blu-Ray Copy Breakthrough that makes you duplicate your Blu-Ray and DVD movie collections without worries of losing them while at the same time making them playable on Blu-Ray and DVD players or Sony PS3 is certainly a gift made in heaven.

Dealing with media files nowadays can be tricky however with the right tool; you certainly can become an expert in less time.

Fact Snippet: Software Development Process

December 12, 2009 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Writing software reviews has been a rewarding experience but despite the fact that I’ve been doing it for quite sometime, I think it’s about time for me to dig a little deeper on how a software comes to life after the cunning hands of software developers then afterward gets used by end users and reviewed by enthusiasts like me.

Like any other product, before any software is launched into the market, it undergoes several processes similar to manufacturing of which is often represented by the Waterfall model.

The Waterfall model is a sequential software development process often attributed to a waterfall since its progress is steadily flowing in a downward direction (see figure below).

Waterfall model

Waterfall model

The Waterfall Model was taken from Royce’s article written in 1970 which later became the way to criticize a commonly used software practice.

The Waterfall model is comprised by the following phases:
1. Requirements specification
2. Design
3. Construction (implementation or coding)
4. Integration
5. Testing and debugging (also called Validation)
6. Installation
7. Maintenance

There are many cited arguments though about how the process should be done contrary to the above model and among those are inconsistencies in case clients change their requirements and design which means, one can’t easily move forward to the next step unless the previous ones are perfected which in return immobilize the whole process and thus increasing costs and eating more time.

On the other hand, the Sashimi model by Peter DeGrace allow feedback in between phases although quite similar in scope as the Waterfall model, this method however alleviates the need to modify and correct certain issues before moving forward which is good because this allows ample time to discover bugs and do some fixes whenever it comes between each phase.

Given these facts above, it open up the avenues for understanding how a software is developed before being released and to think that is requires a lot of effort and time to do so, I must say kudos to those guys for creating savvy pieces of tools for today’s computer driven world.

Why AVG 9.0 Free Falls Short to Please?

December 9, 2009 | By | 6 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Before AVG 9.0 was released in the market, I have been using this software for quite sometime in fact, I even featured this so many times as the software that saved my PC from Conficker however I certainly believe that end-users still has the final say and things should always change for the better whenever possible.

It may sound a bit ironic compared to the previous praises for the software I gave but all I’m after now is value. Are you willing to keep something that hasn’t improved overtime or maybe improvements that you can get only if you’re willing to pay?

At the onset, I was excited about the improvements but seeing the benefits on a free user’s point of view, I didn’t get much of what I’ve expected.

First, AVG fails to reach its goal of 50% reduction in scan times. I’ve tested it (see screenshot below).

AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0

AVG Anti-Virus Free 9.0

AVG normally scans my PC for 2 hours and 45 minutes but now, it has been reduced to 2 hours approximately, close to 27% improvement in scan time but not exactly the faster way to go.

AVG 9.0 Product Overview

AVG 9.0 Product Overview

User interface didn’t really changed that much maybe because I’m a free user and some of the benefits of paid users added in the menu aren’t highlighted.

Identity theft protection is not available for free versions so don’t expect that much security.

If AVG is really sincere enough in keeping their users like me free from online threats, they should have at least thought of keeping this functionality for free minus the paid support if what they argue is getting revenue for the cost of keeping those services delivered via email or phone which is totally understandable.

Protection from web forgery is pretty important and if the above functionality is available for free users, it’s going to be an added value plus long-term benefits for them.

If AVG doesn’t have an aim of monopolizing the antivirus market by making a salient feature free, then somewhere along the line, competitors will definitely find a way to capitalize this loophole.

Everything in the world today is becoming mobile from 3G to 4G WWAN wireless networks. Businesses gear-up to these demands of the times in order to survive today’s rapidly changing environment that are largely controlled by mediums that transmit and support information access across various channels.

Mobile connection management tools play a large part in making great things possible such as mobile connectivity and security management for workforce requirements that provide IT management with the aid of a mobile VPN plus added security and authenticated sessions.

Aside from managing diverse mobile devices which include PDAs, Smartphones and other advanced next-generation phones, users also have the ability to customize their experience with personalized services, apps and menus that suits their needs. Some applications even allow calls to be seamlessly switched between cellular networks and WiFi in real-time through VoIP, Instant messaging or IM, Presence, Multimedia exchange and SMS.

Mobile connection management software also provides image compression on camera enabled phones without sacrificing quality as well as special application software with aesthetic and advanced creation tools for developers of 3D animation, games, and digital arts.

Rarely that these information are discussed on blogs and I do at some point find myself overwhelmed but for those of you who may have the idea and want to learn more, you may visit this mobile connection manager website for further information on options which I believe could help further mobilize your business.

Some of the robust solutions highlighted include enterprise options, specialized tools for cable and mobile operators, device and computer manufacturer applications, and amazing tools for small businesses and commercial software for savvy end-users.

Seamless management of multiple wireless networks has been a complete challenge for businesses catering to the mobile market but innovative developers will always find a way to remain competitive and the best move is to entrust your business’ success to those with exclusively granted patents and proven track record. Change is inevitable but those who always find a way to improve will always remain on top of their game.

Have You Ever Spied on Someone Else’s Computer?

It’s not that I’m inviting you to do something unethical as the title may imply but what if you do have the chance to do so? Well, this may sound very disrespectful to someone else’s privacy if you put up a computer spy on someone’s property but then again if it’s for a good reason then would you?

Several computer programs came out with the massive use of internet and concerned parents have dealt with many pains in securing their computer is always child-friendly. However, there are cases wherein due to today’s readily accessible cyber space, kids can just runaway from those security parameters through powerful proxies and manage to break-in without leaving a trace. In this case, there’s no evidence and as a parent, you cannot penalize your kids for no offense.

However, if installing a computer spy can caught them in the act of visiting prohibited sites, would you use it? If your answer is yes, then you need the help of a computer spy, a software designed to watch closely every single keystroke, web pages, images, chat messages and all other activities within a PC.

Industries also adopt this technology to detect employees goofing off during work hours and for detecting any suspicious activity.

If you think employing this mechanism on a computer is unethical then you can always show your disapproval on the comment’s section.

Barcode Software 101

November 6, 2009 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Did you know that the first product to be scanned with a barcode was a 10 pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum?

This fact may sound a bit too elementary for you but this is where my post will evolve. June 1974 marks the first use of a bar coding scanning equipment first seen in Marsh’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio although it wasn’t that much adopted for commercial use.

You may want to ask, who ate the gum afterward? Tell you what, to this date, the pack of gum remains on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

Looking back at the history of barcodes which was basically intended for labeling railroad cars, its adoption by the United States Department of Defense using Code 39 symbology (or the mapping between messages and barcodes) to mark all products sold to the US military started the widespread adoption of barcoding in industries.

At present, almost every item from supermarkets and grocery stores has a UPC (Universal Product Code) barcode. Generally, barcoding helps in tracking huge amount of items, inventory and sales for retailers and an added security as well for consumers in terms of returns. It’s also used extensively for membership cards on big retail chains, document management, shipped items for currier and freight forwarders, and boarding passes for travelers are just among its countless uses.

Barcode Scanners (also known as Barcode Readers) are electronic devices used to read printed barcodes using a light source, lens and a light sensor that decodes image data to the scanner’s output. Industries utilizing the barcoding technology on a larger scale utilize barcode software which can be used with MSWord or MSExcel for creating invoices or other documents with barcodes. In fact, some companies adopt Inventory Control Software for managing large amounts of inventory and better tracking.

Nowadays, employers make use of Time and Attendance Software for tracking attendance records which may include biometric (fingerprint scan), RFID (ID badges) or barcode time clock. This way, employers can track who were tardy, absent, over break or anybody who’s sleeping during work hours.

Barcoding has rapidly evolved and is not going anywhere as far as I know but imitating the Hitman (a guy with a barcode tattoo on his shaved head) movie idea isn’t clever.

Free Software to Check If Your Website Is Down

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Site uptime is very important. It’s a highly significant factor to check in dealing with web hosting companies—their ability to deliver at least a score close to a perfect one hundred.

Who would want to have his website down almost every second yet pay an ample amount? Nobody right?

Since I have had a bitter web hosting experience, I think I’m a better source for tips about things related to web hosting particularly in keeping an eye on your web hosting provider if they are really keeping what they’ve promised.

Without further a do, I would like you to know that you can use a tiny piece of software that will alert you on your desktop once your blog or website becomes unreachable.

SiteUp does the job of making sure you are alerted every time your site is down. This application runs on your system tray and checks your site depending on the monitoring options that you have set.

Alerts are in the form of a pop-up warning message, a balloon hint or through flashing the icon on the tray.

SiteUp is free unlike other website uptime checkers. Among the other information it provides include displaying a message when the site goes back online, a log file when the site become available which is something you can show to your host as a proof, it can be set to auto-start at Windows start-up and check for active Internet connection.

SiteUp Configuration Options

With SiteUp, you can be informed on how your web host is performing—real time. How about you? Do know any free software that does the same? How do you know if your blog/website is down?

AVG 9.0 Now Out With Improved Features

October 9, 2009 | By | 16 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes

One of the world’s most popular free anti-virus software and its family of free and paid internet security products recently released AVG 9.0 in the market.

AVG promises to deliver significant enhancements in speed and levels of protection on its newest version which I believe is pretty important. In fact, it normally takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete a scan on my PC (free version). AVG 9.0 aims to provide ease of use without compromising user experience while consistently providing security protection to its users.

AVG 9.0 targets reduction of up to 50 percent in scan times and improvements of 10 to 15 percent in boot times and memory usage depending on the system’s configuration. By marking the files as safe or unsafe, during the first scan, users can now skip the safe files for future scans unless the file structure changes.

Resident Shield, firewall, and identity protection modules are all integrated in this version which will allow modules to share malware information to each other enabling AVG’s detection ability, malware, rootkits, and ID Theft threats removal accurately especially on computers where signatures have not yet been issued.

Also, AVG 9.0 is set to deliver improved anti-phishing detection through its LinkScanner enhancements which can quickly determine if a certain web page is a phishing site. Provided is the ability to detect whether a certain third-party product interferes or conflicts with your currently installed AVG antivirus.

The software company also introduced the AVG Identity Theft Recovery Unit (ITRU), a dedicated service to offer free support for AVG customers in the US who has been a victim of identity theft that is accessible through the AVG Security Toolbar.

These promising additions really make AVG unique from a plethora of antivirus softwares available and is something to look forward to as my computer was then saved by AVG from the Conficker virus.

Online Anonymity and Privacy Protection Offered By IP Privacy

October 7, 2009 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

Online security has always been the target of all unscrupulous entities no matter how we try to protect it but we always have the choice—fight them or be vulnerable.

There are enormous selections of tools available online that provides security protection and identity concealment through IP proxies. These IP proxies hides the user’s identifying tracks to prevent data collection from websites such as location, operating system , browsing habits and other identifiable information that a user wants to keep.

As proxy sites allow anonymous browsing over the Internet on a secured network where access to certain sites are not allowed, an IP concealment software however switches your machine’s local IP by routing its traffic to foreign proxies which IP Privacy software does best.

IP Privacy allows you to select an array of new proxies (foreign proxies) to test and browse anonymously. There are two main modes available—enable online anonymity and enable privacy modes.

Enabling the online anonymity mode will hide your real IP address while enabling privacy mode will block invasive codes like Java script and ActiveX on visited web pages plus the online privacy option within the IP Privacy settings offers time-framed online track erasures such as Internet History, Cookies, typed URL, Temporary Internet files, forms and online passwords.

I have tested the IP Privacy software on this blog which uses the Visitor Maps and View Who’s Online WordPress plugin (which tracks website visitors location, IP, and specific pages viewed) and it’s amazing that my local IP routes to a foreign country. It really does its purpose along side its user-friendly interface which makes it easy to maneuver.

Unfortunately, this is a shareware so it’s limited to a 3-day trial only use. Requires full license based on annual subscription. I was just lucky that they contacted me to try this nifty tool.

For further information about its features, you may visit IP Privacy Features page. Immediate download is available by clicking this link. Questions and comments on this program is much welcome.

iSCSI SAN Software and Storage Virtualization: An Overview

September 24, 2009 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

It’s going to be a little bit tough this time discussing something as obscure as this topic but I’ll certainly do my best to make it lighter and understandable as I can.

Web hosting as we all know operate on virtualized servers. Considering the concept of Storage virtualization involves the abstraction of logical storage from physical storage which means virtualization of storage takes place by making data independent of its location.

Having a little concept about web hosting, normally an IP is provided. An iSCSI (pronounced eye-skuzzy) also known as Internet Small Computer System Interface that is IP-based serves as the storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. Whenever SCSI commands are carried over within the network, iSCSI facilitates the data transfers over intranets and manages location-independent data storage and retrieval over long distances using its existing network infrastructure. It also makes possible the transmission of data over local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and the Internet.

As a popular storage area network (SAN) protocol, it provides organizations the ability to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while at the same time providing hosts (such as database and web servers) with the illusion of locally-attached disks making it a lot better than the traditional Fibre Channel, which requires special-purpose cabling.

Having iSCSI storage software makes possible the conversion of any standard 64-bit or 32-bit Windows Server into a scalable SAN that can work over an existing Ethernet network. A great example of this is that of StarWind Enterprise Server that helps organizations build rock-solid, high-performance IP SAN on IT-friendly budget.

Part of iSCSI SANs disaster recovery mechanism is its ability to allow entire disk arrays migration across a WAN with minimal configuration changes, thus, making storage “routable” in the same manner as network traffic which can also be applied in extreme cases whenever there are prolonged outages. In simple terms, it can function as a back up.

I have only discussed the salient points of the topic and tried not to be too technical as much as possible. If you have any questions or insights that you would like to share, feel free to do so at the comments section. This post was brought to you by our friends from

Veoh-ize Your Weekend Online Movie Viewing Habits

September 14, 2009 | By | 1 Reply More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

As an online movie buff, I normally spend the weekend watching online movies on free websites. For those of you who might have missed, here again is my post entitled, Ten Most Admired Websites to Watch Online Movies for Free.

This subsequent post however is something I cannot consider a sequel but perhaps a great tip that I could share. If you have visited some of the online movie sites I recommended, some of the links to the videos are hosted on Veoh.

Veoh is an independent Internet Television Broadcasting System founded by Dmitry Shapiro in 2004. Veoh functions as a peer-to-peer distribution network with technology relying on the Internet with broadcast quality video content similar to Fancast but slightly different from DailyMotion and YouTube.

Whenever you encounter a movie link redirecting to Veoh, the player window normally shows just a five minute preview and right below is a message encouraging you to download the Veoh Video Compass and Web Player so you can watch the full length video. Once you completed the download and activated the player, all you need to do is refresh the page and voila! You can now enjoy the full length video be it a three hour movie!

Veoh Video Compass

Veoh Video Compass

The Veoh Video Compass allows seemless browsing of videos on the internet as you search by providing related video clip suggestions based on your search terms (works well with Firefox and Internet Explorer).

Veoh Web Player

Software to Protect Laptops from Being Stolen

September 5, 2009 | By | 9 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

What would you do if your laptop gets stolen?
A. Call for help and find out who took it.
B. Forget it, move on and just buy something new.
C. I don’t know. I have no idea.

It seems like a difficult question to ask but what if it happens to you? The first option is a natural response. Who would ever want somebody to just simply get away from stealing another’s property?

The second option is something I’ve made up but I’m not really sure if it’s going to be the initial reaction of anybody who’ll be in that situation. What do you think?

For the last option, I would not blame anybody who’ll be in the same state. It would be shocking at first but you don’t have to be in a helpless situation. There’s free software that is designed to protect laptops from being stolen.

LAlarm, free laptop alarm security software designed to safeguard laptops from being stolen. LAlarm buzzes an alarm whenever a laptop is in danger of being stolen or losing data. It can even recover and destroy data if the laptop is stolen.

An alarm is normally triggered whenever the AC power cord from a locked laptop is removed. Ideal for laptops left unattended in an unsafe place for a particular time period.

LAlarm protects sensitive data in a laptop by permanently destroying all its data with the option of having all its data emailed to the owner even before it’s destroyed and it can also be used to wipe out all its data at the end of laptop lifecycle. It can also trigger the alarm if the laptop is placed outside an acceptable perimeter.

Among the many features of the software include laptop damage prevention due to sudden power loss, prevents data loss for both physical and logical disk problems, laptop failure prevention by detecting signs of HDD deterioration and recommends HDD replacement at an early stage, plus the ability to send SMS or email to mobile phones whenever an alarm goes off or when a data destruction is completed.

For technical concerns about the software, don’t hesitate to contact the developer’s site. This software was personally suggested by Mr. James Lee, General Manager at LAlarm (via contact us) and this post was written in gratis as a friendly response.

Weapon Closet: The Anti-Stress Software on the Planet!

Most of you may have yet encountered real anti-stress software. Well, I’m not talking about gaming softwares like Solitaire, Minesweeper, or anything that can be found on your computer that comes with Windows.

I’m talking about the real deal anti-stress software that I have long been using which was indeed stress relieving.

Weapon Closet Anti-Stress Software

Weapon Closet Anti-Stress Software

The Weapon Closet is pretty light executable software that requires no installation. All you need to do is run the software and voila…instant stress relief. Highly recommended for working people who are normally in front of their computers and finds no outlet to expel those unhealthy emotions.

What is this software all about? It only contains these pretty destructive tools such as Hammer, Chainsaw, Machine Gun, Laser, Termites, Rubber Stamp, Water Gun, Color Splatter, and a Flame Thrower. Once you open up the program, all you have to do is select which among those tools you are going to use to mess up your desktop screen. Seriously, yes! you’ll be messing up your desktop screen like it was never your office’s equipment and like you don’t care at all.

The best thing about this though is after having a blast destroying your company’s property is you won’t be liable for it. Can’t believe it? You should because all you ever did was made in a virtual screen. It’s an executable file developed using a visual programming tool called Peter developed by and is copyrighted by Ing. Miroslav Nemecek. The software is a freeware, primarily a desktop game but not your typical desktop game that requires you to think because this one just makes you do whatever you want. Strictly, no rules.

If you’re excited about using this software, then head on to this link to download. Enjoy and share your experience!

Are Speed Reading Softwares for Real?

August 15, 2009 | By | 9 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

It was really intriguing to actually find softwares promising increased reading speed. I’m pretty sure that there were some existing techniques that can be learned on how to do this, the idea of buying software just for it doesn’t make sense to me.

Speed Reading Software

Speed Reading Software

While most Speed Reading Software publishers claim that using their programs can tremendously increase reading rate, like how many of these people who had bought and used these softwares really achieved positive results?

As we all know, practice makes perfect. I agree with that. In all our endeavors, we strive to meet our specific goals by pushing ourselves to be better in what we do. Athletes train rigorously for sporting events, teachers undergo training to upgrade their skills, students study hard to get good grades while bloggers write and read more to produce better posts.

This idea of increased reading speed can be attained through frequent reading, correct? Try to experiment on yourself by lessening your reading habits for about a week or month then go back to your usual routine. What do you observe? Of course you’ll notice some differences.

Its plain simple, using these speed reading softwares will subject you to exercises that require reading and these are all introduced within the software’s functionality. The only difference is these programs have built-in timers for your reading sessions. So, why spend a dime when you can just practice reading everyday at your own pace. I’m pretty sure that you will get increased speed and comprehension in no time.

I came across some Speed Reading Softwares online—Speed Reader X, Reading Genius, Freader, AceReader, and EyeQ that you can use at your own discretion. I’m not endorsing any of them so don’t think that I’ll get any affiliate commission. This Speed Reading Software idea is just plain ridiculous for me.

If you really want to practice on increasing your reading speed, I’d suggest reading more often and play with different types of reading materials. Have some variety in your reading. Don’t just read those you’re familiar with but try reading obscure and even vague or jargonized written media. It will expose you to different levels of reading difficulty and build your vocabulary.

I may also want to share “The Speed Reading Monster Course” for your reading pleasure but since the author disclaims any warranty (expressed or implied) about the ebook, neither do I, so just read the ebook’s Warranty and Terms of Use Agreement. You can download the ebook here.

If you have anything to share about how you improved your reading rate or if you ever used any Speed Reading Software or just about anything related to this topic, please feel free to do so at the comment’s section.

Kiss Those Cookies Goodbye with Cookienator

August 13, 2009 | By | 3 Replies More

Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes

Whenever the word “cookie” comes to my mind, I always think of those tasty little flat-baked treats I used to eat along with a glass of milk. But when I got older and became exposed to the world of computing, it brought a new meaning that I sometimes thought as an invasion of privacy.

If the cookie monster eats “cookies” on Sesame Street, the other “cookie” otherwise known as HTTP cookie eats your privacy as you go online whether you like it or not. An HTTP cookie is small piece of text stored by an internet browser to the user’s computer for session authentication and online usage tracking statistics.

While cookies are advantageous for easy online browsing and logging-in sessions, it can however create a matter of privacy concerns. As online security nowadays are becoming more vulnerable, presence of cookies in your computer can make you less comfortable because you’ll never know if you’re being watched.

Most browsers have the option to delete cookies for every internet session you’ve had however, some cookies are so sticky that they even last for months on your PC even if you tried removing them. Some cookies are closely detected by most antivirus software being malware or spyware. There are some websites that work only when the internet browser’s cookies are enabled.

Until recently, I’ve discovered the Cookienator—a light-weight executable program designed to keep users hidden from search engines such as Google and other notorious web-usage trackers by providing a simple and easy to use menu that is also configurable. The Cookienator software is designed to remove potentially harmful cookies stored in your computer for so long.

I’ve just started using the software and from the looks of it, it was pretty cool and worth trying out. It’s hard disk friendly and free to download and use. Go ahead and try the Cookienator and let me know what you have to say.

Is Free Antivirus Software No Good?

July 24, 2009 | By | 1 Reply More

Reading time: 5 – 8 minutes

Choosing the best antivirus software is crucial for computer usage in order to get rid of malware from infecting your computer. End users have different standpoint on which antivirus software works for them. Being a software enthusiast myself, you can only have an attachment with particular software based on experience and I mean long term experience—hands-on exposure. Nothing can take the place of an actual experience over theoretical statements or assumptions. It is no different than choosing your home appliance, your clothing line or store, it all boils down to which product meets your requirements and expectations.

When it comes to antivirus software, we all have our own choices and some of us have different requirements. While most of us prefer user-friendly programs, some advance users may prefer more feature rich software while those who are just new to this may resort through trial and error in order to decide which one works for them but above all things, its our computer’s protection we’re after.

Trend Micro, one of the leading corporate cloud security providers, offers free antivirus tools for home users as they understand that not everyone can afford hundreds of dollars in virus definition subscriptions. By giving out an effective preventative tool, they can help slow the spread of malware across the internet which also helps promote their commercial products.

It was just surprising that a niche site posted an article questioning the capability of free antivirus software to deliver the necessary protection to computers blatantly describing the option as risky. Many of us may not agree with this statement at all ever and will condemn such generalization.

What I’m talking about was the blog post of PC Mag entitled “Can You Afford To Use Free Antivirus?” which was rather appalling to the extent that they are a niche site yet they have tendencies to sway on what could have been a blog post that could have showcased their expertise and integrity.

Semantec’s David Hall, Product Manager for Asia-Pacific Consumer Products and Solutions said that free antivirus software can’t keep up with those full-priced suites offered by their company and even though it sounds conceited, PC Mag agreed that Semantec has a point.

Talking about Microsoft Security Essentials alone, they stated that Microsoft created their own version of antivirus as an answer to incapable free antivirus softwares such as AVG or Avira otherwise if the latter guys could not have done a good job, Microsoft wouldn’t have thought of coming up with something on their own.

PC Mag said and I quote,

“The free products also don’t generally update themselves with the same frequency as the pay programs.”

Alright, before you react and I know you will. Allow me to dissect each sections of the post. As a continuation,

“One exception to this may be Panda’s upcoming Cloud Antivirus, but it’s a little early to say. The cloud approach does change the rules on updates.”

It seems that the author doesn’t have an idea if free antivirus software do update on its own and stating Panda’s Cloud Antivirus could be promotional if not unwittingly but may also indicate uncertainty on the author’s part. The post’s second to the last paragraph and first sentence states and I quote,

“I could cite competing authorities on whether the protection quality of the free products is good enough as compared to the pay products, but in a sense none of them are good enough.“

The last paragraph and I quote,

”My common sense tells me that protection provided by the elite pay products is better than that provided by the free products. The reason there are free products, and why there will continue to be free products, is not that they’re as good as the pay products, but that they’re way better than nothing. The more people use them, instead of leaving themselves with big virtual “Kick Me” sign, the better off we all are.”

The former quotation for me is clearly a generalization. If you read between the lines, PC Mag in this author’s behalf concluded that all free antivirus software are crap! Based on the links that this unnamed author cites on the post, he was able to come up with a conclusion that when he/she encountered a Scareware (Scareware is software which pretends to be a security program, pretends to scan your computer and find threats on it, and demands money in order to remove the fictional threats.) one time that he/she has downloaded via a pop up window while surfing the internet. After downloading what he perceived as “free antivirus software” since it run a scan while he was browsing a weather related site, out of curiosity he/she downloaded it. To make the story short, it was a malware that he/she downloaded. And that was the author’s supporting citation about the generalization.

The more striking part is that the author based on the last paragraph states that his/her common sense tells him/her that the protection provided by paid antivirus products are unsurpassable by free ones and that free software are just mere alternative than having nothing at all. Also, the author said that while there are some people like you and me that continue to use and patronize free antivirus software, we’ll never get any better.

It sounds that I needed a lot of coursing in order for me to come up with statements like those above unless there’s an ulterior motive to do so. Coming up with such negative statements especially on a niche site like PC Mag on technical matters such as free antivirus software products is a powerful statement that needs a lot or I mean tons of thinking and research in order to come out reliable and authoritative.

I can’t imagine reading from a technology site certain generalizations that are questionable in nature and lacking with enough supportive proof. I certainly won’t believe a niche site with an author who merely downloads software via pop-ups out of nowhere and creates news out of it with some splash of technical jargons just to make it sound and look geeky and use it as a proof to make generalizations that are out of context.

My common sense tells me that I’d rather not believe niche sites with authors who think that using jargons make them sound reliable and technically authoritative yet lacking in substance.

Based on my previous post entitled, “Conficker can damage MP3 players not just USB drives: AVG Antivirus Software detects and removes Conficker from my ZEN Stone MP3 Player,” I have mentioned in its latter part that I was able to recover my MP3 files after the trouble I’ve had with my Creative Zen MP3 player being infected with Conficker.

The good thing is that Creative Zen has provided a program that resolves majority of player problems such as those that stopped playing or working. This MP3 Player Recovery Software updates your player to the latest available firmware to make it work, meaning it renews it. So, this is the software that saved the life of my MP3 player.

Should I have lost the MP3 files, do you think I would have lost everything totally? Think about it, there’s always a way. I could have used the PC Recovery Smart Recovery Software or the MultiStage Recovery software. If you wanted to know how powerful they are, read this post entitled, “Reliable data recovery softwares that bring files back to life.”

5 Best FTP Clients for Newbie Bloggers and Webmasters

June 19, 2009 | By | 1 Reply More

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

It was only in the beginning of January of the current year when I became familiar in using FTP Softwares so much that I’ve been used to it more than the web interface provided by my web host. FTP clients are a lot easier to maneuver since the interface allows you to simply lunch the program without having to open your web browser in times you need to immediately upload or download something from your site to your computer and vice versa.

I do not want to make an assumption that everyone who will be reading this post knows exactly what I’m saying so I’ll make it simple. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, while an FTP client is a software program for your computer which is used to upload and download files.

FTP runs over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) usually via the well-known port number 21 (data connections usually use port number 20) for incoming connections from clients. These connections coming from the client forms the control stream on which commands are passed to the FTP server (host) and responses are collected.

For bloggers and webmasters, a user-friendly interface makes the usage experience smooth sailing. The availability of many freeware FTPs are remarkable so purchasing commercial FTP software is unlikely to be recommended even by most experienced webmasters and bloggers.

To help newbie bloggers and webmasters become more productive, I’ve compiled a list of the 5 Best FTP Clients for Newbie Bloggers and Webmasters which I think are excellent.

SmartFTP Client—available to both (32 and 64-bit) Windows OS. I’ve tried using this before but I didn’t like the user-interface because it was so confusing. The application window is clean-looking although it’s just not appealing to use for starters to I looked for something else.

CoreFTP for Windows—I’ve been using this FTP client for quite sometime because it’s so easy to use and navigate. The window may not be good looking unlike SmartFTP but the ability to switch connections from one website host to another makes my life easier. I highly recommend this for bloggers and webmaster managing multiple websites with different host names.

FileZilla for Windows and Linux—this is definitely one of the most widely used FTP client since CoreFTP. I’ve used this software for quite a while but this can only manage one connection at a time so multiple web owners are not advised to use this.

Cyberduck—is another open source FTP client with an easy to use interface with quickly accessible bookmarks. I have never used this so I couldn’t say much about it but it’s worth the try. I’ll update you on this once I get to use it when I can.

WinSCP—is an open source SFTP (Secure FTP which can also refer to SSH File Transfer Protocol) client and FTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Again, I’ve never tried using this software so any comments regarding this FTP client is most welcome in the comments section.

Reliable data recovery softwares that bring files back to life

May 13, 2009 | By | 2 Replies More

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

Based on my previous post entitled, “Conficker can damage MP3 players not just USB drives: AVG Antivirus Software detects and removes Conficker from my ZEN Stone MP3 Player“, I have mentioned that I’ve lost all my MP3 files along side the Conficker worm that infected my Zen Stone Mp3 player.

While it’s not a good thing to lose all those things that you’ve worked hard downloading and searching on the net, I’ve figured out a solution to beat this issue. Why not try to recover the lost files instead of re-downloading and re-searching them online? Sounds good, right?

Yes, it was a fact and indeed the best thing to do when you badly want those things you’ve lost back to life. It’s a matter of resourcefulness and thinking out of the box. So, did I succeed in recovering my corrupted MP3 files? Of course, I wouldn’t be writing about it if I haven’t. Want to know what I did?Well, I just simply researched on some software that would help recover data or files. A data or file recovery software or tool allows users to recover data from all popular file systems in situations from accidental file deletion, formatted hard drives, damaged or deleted partitions, to total erasure by a virus wherein the latter of which applies to my MP3 Player’s files.

One of the best data recovery software so far that I’ve used is the PC INSPECTOR Smart Recovery Software developed by CONVAR Germany. PC INSPECTOR Smart Recovery is the only data-recovery program for Flash Card, Smart Media, SONY Memory Stick, IBM Micro Drive, Multimedia Card and Secure Digital Card.

If you have accidentally deleted pictures, videos or audio files from your media, formatted the media or have removed the media during the write process, the software can single handedly reconstruct the corresponding data.

I’ve tried and tested this software on a recently burned data CD that contains photo and video files that are corrupted (due to an incompetent burning software I happen to have experimented) and this worked amazingly well. It was able to recover most of the video files although the time spent was a bit longer that what I’ve expected though generally I could say this is far better than most commercial data recovery softwares pretending to be excellent when in fact the trial versions cannot even deliver. So, this one is a standout.

The other file recovery software that I use was the MultiStage Recovery software which was developed by Enplase Research. Now, this data recovery software is the main reason why my MP3 files had been saved from total deletion due to the Conficker worm infection that invaded my Zen Stone MP3 player. Multistage Recovery software

is fast and highly efficient whose functions speak enough for its purpose. A really powerful tool that I never had expected to do wonders but it’s all worth it. The software may not be free but considering the usefulness of this software is worth investing.

Add-on features that make up a great uninstaller program

May 12, 2009 | By | Reply More

Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes

This post serves as an installment from my previous article entitled, “Tips in finding a better uninstaller program“. As tackled from the latter, there are add-on features that make up a merchantable and an invaluable uninstaller program. While the use of built-in uninstaller within programs are a bit trivial, in this post, you will certainly know why a third-party uninstaller software is a must use.

Going back to uninstaller merchantability, a logger is necessary to watches any significant change that is made to the system during installation. Thereby, a system restore point is created prior to uninstalltion which determine change logs. The intangible part of third-party uninstallers is the Uninstaller itself which is used to reverse changes in the log. In this way, the applications can be uninstalled because all changes that were made at the time of installation are reversed.

Effective uninstallers include an Analyzer which is used to uninstall programs of which installation is not logged by the uninstaller. It analyzes the program and finds all related files and registry entries and deletes it should the user decided to uninstall the program.

Some uninstallers include a Watcher. A Watcher determines if there are running programs for installation programs such as SETUP.EXE, INSTALL.EXE, etc. It normally offers to start the logger when such programs are detected.

The add-ons are additional features that makes an uninstaller program merchantable and invaluable. These are certain applications that comes along with the software so you don’t have to get individual softwares to do certain tasks.

It’s rarely that you can find an uninstaller program with a built-in Autorun Manager, so this means that you can easily manage programs automatically running on Windows startup. Enabling or disabling certain programs is just a breeze.

Quick one click access to certain Windows Tools. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind.

A Junk Files Cleaner is definitely a must have as this cleans up the hard drive from unnecessary files that may slow down you PC and free up disk space relatively.

A Browser Cleaner, Microsoft Office Cleaner, and a Windows Cleaner are simply an add-on worth having that comes along with a great uninstaller program.

One of the nifty features that I admire is getting an Evidence Remover along side the uninstaller I use regularly for years. Emptying the Recycle Bin doesn’t physically erase files and folders deleted because they are just left over in your hard drive. Eats up hard disk space and can easily be recovered by powerful data recovery softwares. Having this Evidence Remover deletes the data from your hard drive impossible enough to recover. I’ve tried this many times that even a hundred-dollar data recovery tool isn’t able to do its job.

One more thing is having an Unrecoverable Delete option within the program which makes deleting files securely and makes your disk space more spacious than ever. Like the former add-on, it deletes the files right from the hard disk making it unrecoverable.

So, do you want a slice of this piece of cake? You can actually get it from and the best part…it’s free.

What you don’t know about freeware and free software

December 28, 2008 | By | 1 Reply More

Reading time: 3 – 5 minutes

Have you ever downloaded any software from the internet that cost you nothing? If you answered yes to this question, then you might have probably downloaded either a freeware or a free software but how will you know?

A software that is declared “free to use” may have full functional capabilities while some other software can likewise be used and modified.

The term freeware refers to a computer software that is available for an unlimited time of use at no cost or for an optional fee. Example of which are those software available online for free downloading but the publisher or developer may be able to accept donations (donationware) voluntarily from the user or downloader in place of a newsletter, alerts on software update, or in support to the product itself which is contrary to shareware (a software-type that is of limited use for trial versions and normally requires a license to be fully functional in exchange of a one-time fee or subscription).

Freeware allows authors to contribute something to the society, retains the code source and track the software’s future development potential.

An important distinction should be made, depending on how the software is used and on vendor policies. Usage of the software for commercial use, personal, and educational is to be considered. Personal use refers to product usage that is non-income generating, commercial use is likewise the opposite while a special case called educational use refers to the ways the software is utilized in the academe.

In some cases, software vendors give discounts for educational use to generate revenue for the software’s distributor and at times consider education use being commercial. This is because most software vendors make an application freeware for personal use and at the same time require a fee to be paid for commercial use. That is why some freeware may contain adware, also known as adware supported freeware programs or advertising-supported software.

A free software, otherwise known as software libre, refer to software that can be used, studied, and modified without restriction, and which can be copied and redistributed in modified or unmodified form either without restriction, or with minimal restrictions only to ensure that further recipients can also do these things and to prevent consumer-facing hardware manufacturers from preventing user modifications.

In order to distribute a software as free software, the human-readable form of the program (the source code) must be made available to the recipient along with a notice granting the free software permissions. This notice is a “free software license“, or a notice saying that the source code is released into the public domain.

Therefore, a free software may be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. However, if a person or company creates a derived software product by modifying the original source code and wishes to distribute the result, it must be done under the same free software terms, including the source code modifications.

Having stated all of these, you definitely know the difference between a freeware and a free software. So the next time you do your search for a free software download on the internet, you know exactly what you’re looking for.

Based on current trends, a freeware with full functionality is a rare—find. Some features are not available or is missing on the freeware version advising a user to purchase a licensed commercial version of the freeware.

Some freeware can be potentially harmful to your computer so be careful in choosing the freeware you want to download. While a free software is free, it’s always hard to find. But there’s always a reward for those who value patience.
